What is DBI

Diversion Based Irrigation (DBI) is a simple and cost effective method that applies gravitational force to guide water from adjacent streams and rivers to the cropping field areas. Hence, DBI also known as ‘Gravity Flow Systems’ – is suitable for undulating, hilly and mountainous terrains. Diversion Based Irrigation (DBI) System presents a unique opportunity to tap water from perennial and semi-perennial streams/springs/water courses/water harvesting structures and diverts & uses it with or without intermediate storage for irrigating fields of small and marginal farmers as well as domestic use at house hold (HH) level.

Components of DBI

The system consists of three main components namely Inlet/Storage Structure, Conduit for conveying water to the farm from the Inlet and an Outlet/Distribution System for discharging water into field. All surface flow irrigation schemes, which are exclusively fed by gravity flow irrigation, could be covered under this theme.
