Why DBI?

Different studies on poverty due to impact of irrigation illustrate a positive relationship between access to irrigation and reduction in poverty. Also study reveals that   poor water control strategy has been one of the reasons for poor socio economic condition of the tribal farmers in India. The accessibility, development & restoration, conservation, judicious utilization and management along with proper control of water are major hindrances in the livelihood enhancement of the tribal pockets of India. The essence of the Diversion Based Irrigation Management (DBIM) is felt as the “Need of the Hour” by the different civil society Organization working at the grass root level. Hence initiative has been taken to promote such low cost and less maintenance, area specific small scale Irrigation.

  • Such schemes are technically feasible only in far flung, Remote and Tribal areas usually neglected by the State

  • The people living there do not have much voice, visibility and Decision Making Ability(Inclusiveness Index)

  • They require small investments that are ignored by irrigation departments

  • Often the location of diversion is in forest Areas and hence revenue administration has no interest

  • Though there are sporadic efforts for tapping such irrigation potential, their aggregation at national level has not happened
